Sunday, September 11, Significant Figures Speed Dating Activity My physical science students are currently working on determining the correct number of significant figures to use in different situations. The first step is for them to be able to recognize how many significant figures there are in a number. I made posters to hang up in my classroom for them and me! I decided this was the perfect topic to make into a speed dating activity. You can find the files for my significant figures posters here. To create cards for the speed dating activity, I typed up 20 numbers into a Publisher file. I tried to include numbers written in scientific notation and numbers written in standard form. Then, I designed the file to print the correct number of significant figures on the back of the card when printed double sided. Here are what the front of the cards looked like when I was finished.

And though I can’t draw a causal line between my day of speed dating—I mean, going to parent-teacher conferences—at the Lab School and a reduction in homework assignments, it did seem to me.

If you intend to post a link to this blog on Twitter, be aware that for utterly mysterious reasons, Twitter thinks this blog is spam, and will prevent you from linking to it. I call it the “Maple Leaf Loophole. It hits all my requirements for a practice activity: To prepare, you will need cards or slips of paper with problems on one side and the answers on the other. Here are some rational expressions cards to try out.

It’s important to use problems that will take all your kids about the same amount of time to complete. To differentiate, use a mix of difficulties. If you will have the whole class working together, you need as many problems as students.

Posted on November 3, 5 comments A problem on a recent assessment I gave to my 9th graders caused me to reflect upon the role of efficiency in mathematical problem solving. In particular, how much value is there in asking students to be efficient with their approaches, if all paths lead to a similar solution? As such, I find I need to embed some algebra refreshing through the semester to dust off cobwebs and set expectations for honors high school work.

For this assessment, we reviewed linear functions from soup to nuts. My observation is that these students often have had slope-intercept form burned into their memory, but that the link between this and standard form is weak or non-existant.

In the case of radiocarbon dating, the half-life of carbon 14 is 5, years. The percentage of Carbon present in the remains of organic matter can be used to date the age of the organic matter. While 12C is the most abundant carbon isotope, there is a close to constant ratio of 12C to 14C in the environment, and hence in the molecules, cells, and tissues of living organisms.

You’ve got this stuff in you algebar Carbon Radioactive Decay 3. Carbon dating algebra BioMath: Carbon Dating While 12C is the most abundant carbon isotope, there is a algevra to constant ratio of 12C to 14C in the environment, and hence in the molecules, cells, and tissues of living organisms. Eventually, the salt alggebra will eat through the steel and release the Plutonium which, as you know, is quite lethal.

Transcript Archeologists typically use what’s called carbon dating to approximate the age of certain things. The half-life of a radioactive isotope describes the amount of time that it takes half of the isotope in a sample carbon dating algebra decay. This constant ratio is maintained until the death of an carbon dating algebra, when 14 C stops being replenished.

Carbon carbon dating algebra is a carbom form of carbon which decays over time. After 5, years, the amount of carbon 14 left in the body is half of the original amount. The last figure I heard was that there are currently eight nuclear subs carbon dating algebra our ocean floors. Carbon dating algebra doesn’t really matter carbon dating algebra we don’t know the exact amount, we’re still trying to solve the same exact way.

Such concepts would have been part of everyday life in hunter-gatherer societies. The idea of the “number” concept evolving gradually over time is supported by the existence of languages which preserve the distinction between “one”, “two”, and “many”, but not of numbers larger than two. For example, paleontologists have discovered in a cave in South Africa , ochre rocks about 70, years old, adorned with scratched geometric patterns.

Saturday, December 4, Math Game: Risk Your Beginning Algebra Skills1. I showed my students the fabulous prizes they could win Blink, pentominoes, or 3 burnable cds , and used my announcer voice instead of my Math Mama voice. I’m giving an early final on Tuesday so they can have two chances the official final exam period is the next week. We had to start reviewing this week, which is usually sort of boring for me.

This totally changed it for me, though I can’t guarantee it was a better review for them. I do think the high energy keeps people going. Most of the problems featured in the game came from their practice finals, and they were supposed to do all of the problems on their practice final before coming to class on Thursday. But of course most of them hadn’t. We have a high school housed at our college called Middle College High School, and I have a number of high school students in two of my three classes.

They have a class called Early College Seminar, where they get help with their homework. So they had all done their practice finals. And the winners of the game in the first two classes were all MCHS students. I didn’t want to just have one of the students who always does well be the winner, so I got prizes for two winners.

The sum of 7 and 11 is If the product of a number and —7 is reduced by 3, the resulting number is 33 less than twice the opposite of that number. What is the number? We always have to define a variable, and we can look at what they are asking.

Final Reflection Looking back at my first algebra post, I feel like I’ve changed a lot. At the beginning of the year I didn’t really know what to expect and I wasn’t very nervous. The class was a lot more challenging than I expected, but in a good way. I felt like I learned a lot of new concepts that I hadn’t known before and were really interesting. My weaknesses when it comes to math pretty much stayed the same, but overall it was really interesting to get to know so many new things. This year I struggled most with solving and graphing quadratic functions.

It was hard for me to determine which method to use to solve equations. It was difficult to find out if the problem was factorable and how I would actually factor it. Using the quadratic formula was a very extensive process and it left a lot of room for little mistakes.

Once they have it complete, they raise their hand to have it checked by the teacher. Once everyone has it right, they are the master of their card. You then start the activity. I set my desks up so students are facing each other. You set students across from each other. They then switch cards and perform the problem.

History of Technology Heroes and Villains – A little light reading Here you will find a brief history of technology. Initially inspired by the development of batteries, it covers technology in general and includes some interesting little known, or long forgotten, facts as well as a few myths about the development of technology, the science behind it, the context in which it occurred and the deeds of the many personalities, eccentrics and charlatans involved.

You may find the Search Engine , the Technology Timeline or the Hall of Fame quicker if you are looking for something or somebody in particular. Scroll down and see what treasures you can discover. Background We think of a battery today as a source of portable power, but it is no exaggeration to say that the battery is one of the most important inventions in the history of mankind. Volta’s pile was at first a technical curiosity but this new electrochemical phenomenon very quickly opened the door to new branches of both physics and chemistry and a myriad of discoveries, inventions and applications.

The electronics, computers and communications industries, power engineering and much of the chemical industry of today were founded on discoveries made possible by the battery. Pioneers It is often overlooked that throughout the nineteenth century, most of the electrical experimenters, inventors and engineers who made these advances possible had to make their own batteries before they could start their investigations.

They did not have the benefit of cheap, off the shelf, mass produced batteries. For many years the telegraph, and later the telephone, industries were the only consumers of batteries in modest volumes and it wasn’t until the twentieth century that new applications created the demand that made the battery a commodity item. In recent years batteries have changed out of all recognition. No longer are they simple electrochemical cells.
